GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- David Eaton will spend five to 30 years in prison for the killing last July of another homeless Grand Rapids man, Steven Spadorcia.

Eaton, 69, was defiant at his sentencing before Judge Dennis Leiber. "It's not fair," Eaton said, maintaining his assault on Spadorcia was fueled by his drunken anger over Spadorcia's rape of a homeless female mutual friend.

"His (Spadorcia's) death wouldn't have happened if he hadn't did what he did first," Eaton told Judge Leiber.

Prosecutors contend no rape ever occurred.

Eaton's lawyer said the matter was complicated by the fact that no one present on July 18, 2013 could remember anything because they were all too drunk.

Eaton had plead no contest earlier to a manslaughter charge.

Spadorcia was featured in a July 2013 WZZM 13 Watchdog report on panhandling in Grand Rapids. He died several days after the report aired; police said his death was in no way linked to the story.
