HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Sexual assaults spiked in Holland last year, according to a new crime report.
The annual report from the Holland Department of Public Safety shows 87 sexual assaults in 2013, which is up from 65 incidents in 2012 and 58 sexual assaults in 2011.
Police are not exactly sure why there's been an increase in sexual assaults, but they believe it may be from more people reporting the crime.
"When victims feel like it's easier to report those types of things, we're going to probably see the numbers increase," said Captain Jack Dykstra. "We're looking why those numbers went up and we'll get that explanation to you."
The report found other violent crimes in Holland remained relatively steady. The West Michigan Enforcement Team (WEMET) gang unit is being credited for reducing gang activity in the area.
