Holland, Mich. (WZZM) Holland Tulip Time got off to a chilly start Friday. Temperatures remained in the upper 40's near 50 degrees with off and on rain. Organizers of the annual event say the cooler weather is hindering the blooms, but the flowers are ready to pop. Susan Zalnis is Marketing Director for Tulip Time, "The early tulips are already open and we are keeping our fingers crossed for sunshine the next couple of days." Zalnis says, "It only takes a little bit of sunshine and they are going to pop."
Gwen Auwerda is the event's Executive Director. She says despite the cooler weather there is a lot of interest. "We have over 500 thousand visitors who come from around the world to our community."
She says in addition to the tourists, Tulip Time is a big community event. She says it's a kick-off to the new tourist season in Holland. "The whole community comes out and helps over a thousand volunteers help with our events parking trash you name it that's what they do. People do love tulip time it's wonderful."
