HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) — A lightning strike forced students to evacuate South Shore Christian Middle School in Holland Tuesday.

It happened as storms rolled into the area just after 2 p.m.

Dispatchers told WZZM 13 News that smoke was coming from the roof and was in a small gym, too.

Fire fighters responded within seven minutes; they had been working on two other incidents when this call was dispatched.

According to the Holland Department of Public Safety's Twitter account, firefighters inspected the building and had the flames extinguished by 2:56 p.m. Firefighters estimate there was less than $5,000 of damage, which mostly affected a small area of the roof. There was some minor damage to the ceiling below the fire area, too.

The school's superintendent tells WZZM 13 that all eighth grade students evacuated the building within a minute. He says the seventh grade class was on a field trip at the time of the lightning strike. The school's principal tells public safety officers the evacuated students were transported to Holland Christian High School while firefighters investigated the strike.

No one was injured.
