HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- April showers are supposed to bring May flowers, but this season more things are blooming than usual and it's causing big headaches for allergy sufferers.

For some people, enjoying the beauty of spring, comes with a price.

"Lots of coughing and swelling sometimes," says Ashley Ball. This year, the cost for allergy sufferers may be a little higher. "And here we are in Tulip town."

Despite what some people might think, tulips are probably not the main culprits: allergists say the trees are likely to blame.

"It's like they woke up and shook off all their branches, and this morning I had a headache and stuffy nose," says one allergy sufferer.

Because of a late start to spring, allergists say all the trees are blooming at once, which are expected to cause the worst allergy symptoms in years.

"The sore throat and the headaches have been worse this year," says one woman.

Doctors say it is also a prime season for people to develop new allergies.

"I thought I got out clean, and now that I'm in my 40s, I'm actually coming down with allergies, it's horrible I have to keep Kleenex with me all the time," says another allergy sufferer.

"You take your medicine and enjoy the view it is what it is," says one woman.

Allergists are expecting the bad allergy season to last for the next couple months.
