GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WZZM) -- National Safe boating Week started Friday with an event to get your attention -- you may have noticed workers wearing life jackets to work around West Michigan.

Employees of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Grand Haven were making copies, answering e-mails, and making phone calls in bright orange life jackets.

Tom O'Bryan with the Corps of Engineers says boaters often have life vests but don't always wear them. "By the time you need that life vest and get it out from underneath a seat cushion or where ever they might be stowed it is too late". O'Bryan says, "You need to have them on when you are out there boating."

Saturday people around the world will attempt to break the world record for the number of people wearing life jackets at the same time. You can participate Saturday morning at Hemlock Crossing County Park in West Olive. The event will take place at 11 a.m..
