WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Construction is underway at a lakeshore park that will allow visitors to walk through Michigan's history.

Michigan's Heritage Park at Hilt's Landing is on 19 acres along the White River. The open-air museum's largest buildings, the welcome center and a 1900s farmhouse, are nearing completion.

Now a community fundraising effort is under way to furnish the farmhouse. The Lakeshore Museum Center hopes to have everything in place before the park opens in May 2015.

"People have the opportunity to help us furnish the house. For instance, you could buy a plate for $25, or you could buy a wood burning stove for $5,000," explained John McGarry, director of the Lakeshore Museum Center.

When completed, visitors will also be able to step into wigwams, a settler's cabin, and spend time at a Civil War camp.
