RIVERTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- More than 1,000 boxes used for hauling apples burned in a fire a Mason County fruit processing business Friday afternoon.

The

Mason County Press

reports the fire started around 2 p.m. Friday at the Indian Summer plant, located on West Chauvez Road.

Riverton Township Fire Chief Joe Cooper said he wasn't sure exactly what started the fire. However, an active trash burning pile was located about 30 feet from the pallets.

About 50 firefighters from multiple departments responded to the scene. Flames and heavy smoke could be seen initially but it appears crews have the fire under control.
