KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM)- More than four decades after he was injured in Vietnam, the government is recognizing a Grand Rapids veteran for his service.
Congressman Justin Amash presented Specialist John Goad with a Purple Heart today. Hoag served in the army in the late 1960's and was wounded by a grenade. Before it exploded, Hoag pushed the soldier next to him out of the way, taking the brunt of the blast.
Rep. Justin Amash, (R.) Michigan said,"I'm here to honor John Hoag. He contacted my office in June 2011, he was looking for a right breast ribbon and a flag for his service during Vietnam. And my office did some research and discovered he was owed a lot more than that, including a Purple Heart."
In addition to the Purple Heart, Hoag received five other medals and badges.
