UPDATE AT 3:02 A.M. (WZZM) -- The Grand Rapids Griffins are inviting their fans to a rally to celebrate their Calder Cup championship.

The Griffins defeated the Syracuse Crunch 5-2 in game six of the AHL finals Tuesday.

The team returned to Grand Rapids early Wednesday morning, flying in on one of the Detroit Red Wings' team planes. The Red Wings are the Griffins' parent club in the NHL.

The rally for the Griffins begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Van Andel Arena. Doors open at 5 p.m.

The first 3,000 fans will receive a Griffins Calder Cup champion t-shirt.

SYRACUSE, NY. (WZZM) -- The celebration has been in a holding pattern for a few days, but after six games theGrand Rapids Griffins are Calder Cup champions.

The Griffins beat the Crunch 5-2 at the War Memorial in Syracuse, New York. It's the first Calder Cup in the Griffins' history.

  • 8:25 p.m - Power play goal: Grand Rapids Griffins up 2-1 with six minutes left in the second period.
  • 9:05 p.m. - Tie game again. Sustr scores on shot from the point through a screened Mrazek. 2-2. 13:55 to go in 3rd.
  • 9:11 p.m. - Griffins score, lead 3-2.
  • 9:30 p.m. - Griffins score, lead 4-2.
  • 9:32 p.m. Griffins score, win 5-2.
