GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- A community carnival is underway today at Stocking Elementary school at 863 7th Street.

The pre-K through fifth grade school was closed in 2010, but is reopening as part of the Grand Rapids Public Schools massive transformation plan. That plan includes closing ten schools and shifting the focus of others and it includes the rebirth of Stocking.

GRPS spokesman John Helmholdt says the $2.3 million spent in renovations this year embodies the transformation of the district. Principal Joann Riemersma says the community has been welcoming.

"They're ready to have this school back open and they're ready again for this to be the center of their community which it was," Riemersa told a reporter Tuesday during a media tour of the building.

The carnival, with free food, face painting, entertainment and giveaways, will be underway at Stocking until 8 PM Tuesday.
