GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Javonte Higgins will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murders of David and Vivian Bouwman.
Higgins was sentenced Thursday afternoon to two life sentences. Kent County Circuit Court Judge Mark Trusock had harsh words for the 23-year-old man saying, "you are a very evil person."
A jury found Higgins guilty on two counts of murder March 10. David Bouwman, 81, and his wife Vivian, 80 were killed in their Kentwood home on January 5, 2013.
During last month's trial, prosecutors said Higgins broke into the Bouwman's home, confronted the couple, then shot them both in the head. Higgins stole the couple's car and later burned it in an attempt to destroy evidence.
Prosecutors had no evidence directly linking Higgins to the murders, but their circumstantial case was enough to convince the jury. Higgins was convicted on charges of felony murder, home invasion and a weapons count. His lawyer said she will seek an appeal of the conviction.
