KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) -- Residents are still cleaning up the mess left behind by an EF-1 tornado that ripped through Kent County last week. For the first time, we are hearing the panicked 911 calls from that chaotic night.

"Kent County 911. Do you have an emergency?" "Yes! Just had a tornado go over!"

The calls came in unexpectedly the night of July 6. It was a little after 10 p.m. and there were no tornado warnings in Kent County. "Major power lines down. I'm pretty sure it was a tornado."

Kentwood and Wyoming appeared to be the worst hit areas; people were trapped because of trees on and around their homes. "We have trees down, power lines, we can't get my neighbor out of his house."

"We got a woman trapped--collapsed roof, can't get out." "Is anyone hurt your with? I don't know, I don't know."

Many of the callers didn't know what to do about the power lines. "Listen, if the wires are down, he needs to stay inside the house, safer inside than out."

The scene was chaotic and rescue personnel couldn't get to all the locations. "This is scary as heck...it came so fast!"

In the end, those callers were right; it was an EF-1 tornado that hit the area. One week later and residents are still cleaning up the mess.

A frantic call from the owner of a dog care center in Wyoming. She was trying to save herself and the 30 dogs that were inside a building in the storm's path.

The call came moments after a tornado hit the Well-Mannered Dog Care Center in Wyoming. The storm caused a gas leak there.

The 911 operator encouraged the dogs' caregiver to get out of the building; the caregiver put the dogs first.

"I am a dog lover, I understand," the operator said. "But you need to put your safety first. You understand?"

The caregiver was able to take the dogs to another building. One of the dogs, Puckett, did get loose, but was located a few days later.
