MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) -- We won't know the cause of death for two dogs found dead in Muskegon County unless enough evidence is found to show a crime was committed.

Muskegon County Undersheriff Dan Stout says if detectives can't prove there was an wrongdoing, a necropsy, which is an animal autopsy, will not be performed. He said it is too expensive. The sheriff's assistant told WZZM 13 Tuesday a necropsy would not be performed in any case, which Stout said was not true.

The Pit Bull mix dogs were found along Hyde Park Road last week near a school, with visible injuries to their bodies.

Experts say everything about the situation indicates the animals were involved in dog fighting.

The dogs have been preserved in the freezer the entire time. Undersheriff Stout says the case remains open and they are still looking into tips.
