MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- We're still waiting to hear from the people who run a Muskegon hotel where workers walked off the job over the weekend.

Those workers claim there is black mold inside the Victory Inn & Suites on Henry Street.

We've made repeated attempts to contact the hotel's management, but they haven't made any comment yet.

One of the major concerns about black mold is how it affects your health.

If you research black mold on the internet, you'll get a lot of conflicting information.

Some sites say it causes cancer others say it's not even toxic.

The most reliable information WZZM 13's Valerie Lego found on black mold is from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They conducted several studies and confirm there are some health concerns associated with black mold.

Black mold can cause breathing problems like coughing, sneezing, and eye and skin irritation -- even in healthy people.

It's also been shown to cause asthma in children who are prone to developing it.

For those with a compromised immune system, it can cause pneumonia.

Those working in conditions where they are constantly exposed to black mold can develope a fever and severe upper-respiratory infection.

The good news is that removing one's self from the exposure to the mold, symptoms subside after a few weeks without any long-term effects.
