NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WZZM) -- A gas station clerk opened fire on an armed robbery suspect in Norton Shores on Monday morning. WZZM 13 obtained video of the incident as it unfolded at the Shell station on Henry and Sherman.

It's not hard to tell where the bullets blew out the front door. Now, video is showing why the suspect may be dealing with a shattered ego. It shows him running for his life, bumping into things, before finally make it out the door. Behind him, the clerk is firing round after round.

"It sent a message just don't mess with our stations, don't mess with us," says Anita Yonkman, a Muskegon resident.

Yonkman is tired of the ongoing violence and tired of living in fear. The armed robbery at the Shell gas station was the latest in a series of violent crimes, including murders in the area.

"It doesn't matter if its in the middle of the night, in the afternoon, or first thing in the morning," says Yonkman.

Video first shows the suspect, who was wearing dark clothes and a ski mask, stealing from the register.
Police say he held up the clerk with a revolver and ordered him to the back room, where he loaded cigarettes into a bag.

Police say that's when the clerk fired ten times at the suspect, as he was running away.

"There were ten shots fired all from the clerk himself, the suspect did not return fire," says Lieutenant Jon Gale with the Norton Shores Police Department.

Police say it's not clear if the suspect was hit.

"No blood was found," Lt. Gale told WZZM 13.

Police say the suspect immediately jumped inside a getaway car with a second suspect in the drivers seat. That car is now described as a blue Hyundai Sonata. The vehicle was initially described as a newer, black Chevrolet.

Yonkman says her husband recently got a concealed carry license and she's soon to follow.

"If they realize we're carrying and other people are they'll take a second guess on, 'Do I break in or don't I?'," says Yonkman.

Norton Shores Police are not commenting on whether they support the clerk's action.

Anyone with information should call Silent Observer at (231) 722-7463) or the Norton Shores Police Department (231) 733-2691.
