Student athlete murdered in Muskegon Heights
Newaygo, MI (WZZM) – Muskegon Heights Academy High School football coaches say they asked players if they wanted to go ahead with a Thursday night scrimmage at Newaygo High School. They thought the players might want to cancel after team mate DeQuarious "De De" love was found shot to death early Thursday morning.
"The kids wanted to play," says head football coach Jimmy Purnell. "That's what De De would have wanted. He would have wanted us to play."
17 year old Love was found at the corner of Peck Street and Hume Avenue just before 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Police say he was the victim of a "drive by shooting".
"He was a great guy," says team videographer James Cummings. "Got along very well with the team. He was kind of quiet but he was a great guy."
De De love is the second athlete from Muskegon Heights Academy High School murdered in the street in the past 4 months.
In April 17 year old Marquis Gresham was also shot and killed by a gunman in a passing vehicle.
"I mean it's happening all over again," laments Coach Purnell. "We went down there and when they told me who it was I just said, 'Not again!'"
"That's 2 losses in one year," points out videographer Cummings. "Hopefully we don't lose anymore."
The police have not released many details about the death of DeQuarious Love. Nothing about
possible suspects or motive.
"We are very concerned about our young people in the community," says athletic director Glen Metcalf. "It's just a shame this has to happen to anybody. We want to stop this."
