KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM) - Michigan State Police say weather and speed caused a church van to crash on U.S. 131 Sunday morning. The crash happened in the southbound lanes near Ann Street around 9:00 a.m.

The van was from Wellspring Church located on Wealthy Street in Grand Rapids. Police say the 60 year-old driver lost control of the van, causing it to rollover into the median. Five passengers were in that van but were not seriously hurt.

A second crash, also involving a Wellspring church van, occurred just 45 minutes later on U-S 131 near Post Drive. That van also lost control and flipped over.

Wellspring Church says the van was taking students home from a weekend retreat. Five students were taken to the hospital, but only one needed surgery for severe cuts. That student is expected to be released from the hospital on Monday.
