WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) - Police have arrested the man suspected of robbing the Chase Bank inside the Alpine Avenue Meijer Tuesday evening.
Federal investigators identify the suspect as John Michael Barrera. They say that during Tuesday evening's robbery, he gave the teller a banking envelope with the note "ALL $ NOW" written on it. The teller said she initially didn't know what he meant and asked for clarification, at which point the robber said, "Give me your money, I am counting down. 30, 29, ..." and reached into his pockets. The teller understood the robber to imply he had a weapon. The teller gave him $1,000 and he fled.
After distributing surveillance footage from the bank to local media, a tipster called police, identified the robber as Barrera, and suggested Barrera was at a motel near 28th Street and US-131. Investigators found him at that motel.
Barrera has two previous bank robbery convictions, one in 1996 and another in 2004.
Authorities say Barrera admitted to the Chase robbery and an attempted robbery at a Rockford gas station earlier Tuesday evening.
