WHITEHALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZZM) -- Severe thunderstorms early Tuesday morning caused significant, but spotty damage in parts of Muskegon County.

The storms blew in around 4:30 a.m. and downed a large tree along Orshal Road, north of Duck Lake Road. The tree landed on a house and vehicle, causing major damage. No one was hurt.

"The dogs started jumping in the bed and whining and then the winds came through and we heard the one tree over there crack," said Linda Mixter, whose truck was crushed by the fallen tree.

"Once it started getting light and we looked out the window, then we could see all these other trees that were over the place. Then my husband went out and could see there were trees in the people's houses," Mixter said.

By late morning, tree removal crews had arrived and began cleaning up.

Consumers Energy reported 1,300 customers were without power in parts of Lakewood Club and Fruitland, Blue Lake, Dalton and Whitehall townships. Service was restored to most people by noon.
