GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Grand Rapids Griffins came home Tuesday night to defend their Calder Cup title.
Before the game, the team announced a new television deal.
Beginning next year, at least 40 Griffins game will be broadcast in HD on the new Michigan Entertainment Sports network based in Wixom.
MES spokesman Peter Schinka said, "The Griffins are a really excellent example of what we're trying to do here. They're a top quality hockey program. Strong history in Grand Rapids, strong fan base across the state. They're really well tied in to the Detroit Red Wings, they're the defending Calder Cup champions. They have a lot of fan base locally and across the state. So that's a really good example of the type of team we're looking for - teams that are established and have a really good fan base and have people that want to watch them and cannot currently watch them on televsion."
With this deal, the Griffins will now have more live broadcasts than any team in the AHL except for Chicago.
