DETROIT (DETROIT FREE PRESS) - For the fourth time in the last five games, a Detroit Tigers starter has suffered their worst outing of the season.

Rick Porcello, in his first start since getting extra rest for left side soreness, allowed a season-high 12 hits and eight earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Tigers went on to lose, 12-1, to the Texas Rangers today at Comerica Park.

Donnie Murphy hit a two-run home run off Porcello to give the Rangers a 7-1 lead in the sixth inning.

Right-hander Corey Knebel made his major league debut, but didn't fare much better. He allowed three hits, two walks, three earned runs and one strikeout.

Knebel replaced Porcello with one out and a man on in the sixth. Knebel yielded a double to Mitch Moreland to give the Rangers a seven-run cushion.

Knebel showed off a mid-90s fastball and impressive curve that allowed him to make the rapid rise through the farm system since being selected 39th overall in the MLB draft last June.

After loading the bases with one out in the seventh, Knebel was visited by pitching coach Jeff Jones. Knebel then gave up a bases-clearing triple to Rougned Odor.

The Rangers scored four runs off Porcello in the fourth inning. With one on and two outs, Chris Gimenez hit a double to right. Adrian Beltre scored and Gimenez advanced to third on error by Alex Avila, who missed the catch on the throw home. Leonys Martin followed with an RBI single. Porcello gave up a walk to Donnie Murphy and a two-run triple to right by Odor.

Beltre added a solo home run off Porcello in the fifth.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With two outs, Andrew Romine singled through the hole at shortstop scored on Rajai Davis' grounder down the third base line.
