DETROIT (DETROIT FREE PRESS) - Justin Verlander got roughed up for the third consecutive time and has allowed at least five earned runs in each of those starts.

Verlanderr gave up nine runs (six earned) over 5 1/3 innings to the Rangers on Sunday. He surrendered 11 hits and three walks with one strikeout.

The Rangers went on to beat the Tigers, 12-4. The Tigers were outscored, 35-15, in the four-game series at Comerica Park.

Verlander hasn't allowed at least five earned runs over three consecutive starts since 2008. Verlander hasn't been limited to one strikeout in a start since May 31, 2008. It is the sixth time in 277 career starts that Verlander has been limited to one strikeout or less.

Verlander allowed three runs in his first time through the Texas lineup. The Rangers added five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 9-2 lead.

Alex Rios' two-out infield single scored Shin-Soo Choo in the first inning for the Rangers. The Tigers came back to tie in the bottom of the first, when Rajai Davis came home when Victor Martinez grounded into a force out.

The Rangers regained the lead in the top of the second, after Michael Choice hit a solo home run. Robinson Chirinos followed with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error by Verlander.

The Rangers added five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth before Verlander exited. The Rangers added three more in the seventh to take a 12-2 lead.

The Tigers came back to score twice in the bottom of the seventh. Miguel Cabrera singled, but left with a right hamstring cramp and is considered day-to-day. Torii Hunter had an RBI single and Bryan Holaday came home when Austin Jackson grounded into a force out.

Al Alburquerque replaced Joba Chamberlain with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth for the Tigers and got Luis Sardinas to strike out. Chamberlain left with a right ankle contusion and is day-to-day.
