American League - Tigers 10, Indians 4
CLEVELAND (DETROIT FREE PRESS) – The Detroit Tigers completed a three-game sweep over the Indians with a blowout win.
Miguel Cabrera drove in the first three runs and the Tigers, who went on to beat the Indians, 10-4, this afternoon at Progressive Field.
Cabrera hit a solo home run to right-center in the first inning off Cleveland right-handed starter Josh Tomlin. It was Cabrera's 13th home run this season.
Cabrera added an RBI single in the third and brought home another run when he when he reached on a force in the fifth.
The Tigers went on to score seven runs in the fifth inning. Austin Jackson was originally ruled out at second on the force, but the play was overturned because shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera dropped the ball.
The Tigers successfully challenged and went on to score five runs before their first out. J.D. Martinez extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run double. Nick Castellanos followed with a two-run double. Andrew Romine had an RBI double and came to score on a single to left by Ian Kinsler.
The Indians won a challenge that extended the bottom of the fifth inning and led to their first run of the game. Michael Bourn appeared to ground into an inning-ending double play. Replay showed that Bourn beat the throw to first, though. Max Scherzer gave up single to Asdrubal Cabrera and then an RBI double to Michael Brantley.
Alex Avila added an RBI double in the sixth to give the Tigers a 10-1 lead.
Scherzer (9-3) allowed six hits, two walks and one earned run over six innings with eight strikeouts for the Tigers.
Lefty Blaine Hardy pitched the seventh and had one strikeout for the Tigers. Lefty Patrick McCoy made his major league debut in the eighth inning and gave up one hit with one strikeout.
Right-hander Chad Smith made his major league debut in the ninth and gave up four hits, including an RBI single by Asdrubal Cabrera and two-run double by Brantley, but struck out two to end the game.
