(USA TODAY) - The Detroit Tigers made a move to shore up bullpen with the acquisition of reliever Joakim Soria from the Texas Rangers, according to a person with direct knowledge of the trade.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on condition of anonymity because the trade has not yet been finalized.

In exchange, the Rangers received minor league prospects RHP Jake Thompson and RHP Corey Knebel from the Tigers.

Soria, who was the closer for the Rangers, joins Tigers closer Joe Nathan in the bullpen. It's unclear how the late-inning situations will play out between the two closers, but Soria will serve at least as an insurance policy for oft-shaky Nathan.

Soria, 30, saved 17 games and had a 2.70 ERA this season with the struggling Rangers. He becomes a free agent after the season.
