BROOKLYN, NY (Detroit Free Press) -- The Detroit Pistons used their second-round pick tonight to select Spencer Dinwiddie.

Because they lost their first-round pick to the Charlotte Hornets because of a 2012 trade, draft night lacked its usual sizzle.

But Dinwiddie marks the first draft pick of the Stan Van Gundy era. He was hired as president of basketball operations and coach in May.

Van Gundy said earlier this week that he would seek a hard-working, high-character prospect with an identifiable skill.

Guys with character issues need not apply.

Apparently, the Pistons think Dinwiddie fits the bill.

"At the very top of our list — and we've talked about this a lot — is going to be character and as part of that, hard work," Van Gundy said. "We're not going to take a flyer on guys that have character problems right now.

"I think we've agreed we want a guy where we can identify what his skill is, what his game is, how he's going to help — instead of, 'wow, he's a great athlete and maybe we can teach him to do something.'"
