Move over for emergency vehicles! It's the law

As part of Traffic Incident Response Week, AAA and first responder organizations are teaming up to remind Michigan drivers of the law.

When there is a first responder or other vehicle on the side of the road, drivers are required to move over.

The law applies to stationary vehicles with emergency lights activated on the side of the road, not just fire trucks or police cars. Tow trucks are included in this category.

If it is not safe to change lanes away from the vehicle on the side of the road, drivers are required to slow down and show caution when approaching and passing the incident.

The goal of the campaign is to raise drivers' awareness of the law and remind them of the dangers first responders face when responding to a crash.
