PORTAGE, Mich. - A 7-year-old boy died Tuesday after being hit by a car in Portage, police say.

According to a news release from the Portage Department of Public Safety, the crash happened just before 3 p.m. on South 12th Street, south of West Milham Avenue -- near 12th Street Elementary School.

Police say first responders immediately started rescue efforts when they arrived on scene. Nicolaus Moehle was rushed to the hospital where he died around 7 p.m. Police said he was from Texas Township.

Moehle was participating in a summer camp run by the Portage Public Schools. Counselors will be available to provide support services to students and parents.

No one else was injured in the crash.

Police will continue to investigate the crash, however they say alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
