Police identify 3 people killed, 2 hurt in US 131 wrong-way crash

According to police a driver who got on the wrong ramp at U.S. 131 and Stadium Drive caused the crash.

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, MICH. - Police suspect a driver who got on the wrong ramp at U.S. 131 and Stadium Drive caused Friday's deadly crash, resulting in the death of three people.

Two people, 59-year-old Mark Witsaman of Portage and 88-year-old Elma Witsaman, were killed as they entered northbound U.S. 131 from the southbound lanes in their car, according to a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department news release.

Their vehicle crashed into a pick-up truck, with 57-year-old Victoria Mitchell, 56-year-old William Mitchell and 20-year-old Brent Mitchell inside. Victoria Mitchell died at the scene; the two others were taken to an area hospital with critical injuries.

Police say they do not know why the driver of the car, Mark Witsaman, entered the highway going the wrong way.

The crash remains under investigation.
