I-96 back open after semis crash near Marne

Emergency crews have reopened one lane on eastbound I-96 near 24th Avenue in Ottawa County following multiple crash.

MARNE, MICH. - Eastbound I-96 near Marne is back open after a crash near the Marne exit(23) involving at least two semi-trucks.

Crews shut down the highway shortly after 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, after a semi-truck crashed into the back of another.  Investigators say a 2013 Freightliner driven by Robert Evenbeck stopped after a minor accident with a car.  Shortly after that Ottawa County deputies say a semi driven by 48-year-old Mark Hilliard crashed into the back of Evenbeck's trailer at a high rate of speed.

Crews had to use the jaws of life to free Hilliard from his truck.  He was taken to a Grand rapids hospital with serious injuries.

While crews investigated and cleaned up the area traffic backed up to 68th Avenue -- almost a 4-mile stretch.
