GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - State and local emergency management officials are encouraging Michiganders to take part in a statewide tornado drill this afternoon, April 19, 2017, at 1 p.m.
Although it is not required, nearly all state facilities are participating.
The average lead time for tornadoes to develop ranges, on average, from 10 to 15 minutes. The fast time, requires those in it's path to react quickly.
Here are some tips if you find yourself in a tornado warning:
- Stay away from windows
- Get to the lowest level of whatever structure you are in
- Cover your head, if a helmet is nearby use it
- If you are in a car, seek shelter as quickly as possible
