1 dead, 1 badly hurt in northern Kent County crash

Michigan State Police say someone driving east on 14 Mile Road crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into another vehicle near Wabasis Avenue.

One person has died and another is in bad shape after a crash in northern Kent County.

Michigan State Police say 39-year-old Joseph Hanna from Sparta, was driving eastbound on 14 Mile Road when he tried to pass another car driven by 48-year-old Jerry Kinsey of Spring Lake and crashed.

Troopers say both cars spun out of control and into the westbound lane near Wabasis Avenue and Kinsey's vehicle collided with a third driver. Kinsey's passenger, his 20-year-old son Joel, died. Joel Kinsey was actively serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

It happened just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4. Jerry Kinsey remains in critical condition.

State police don't believe speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
