Pine Rest hosts Depression Summit to share information about this common brain disorder

What is depression, how it is diagnosed and treated and why is a Depression Summit necessary?

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Statistics show that one in six people at some time during their lifetime suffers from depression -- and yet, even the experts who are trained in its diagnosis and treatment will admit there is still a great deal to learn about the brain disorder.

We spoke with two such experts who participated in a Depression Summit, hosted by Pine Rest. Dr. Eric Achtyes is from Pine Rest and Michigan State University, while Dr. Ray DePaulo, Jr. is with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. DePaulo is also chair of the national Network of Depression Centers, of which Pine Rest is also a member.
