Taste of My Town: Forty Acres Soul Kitchen

Have a hankering for some soul food? Forty Acres Soul Kitchen is where you need to be.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- If you are craving soul food with an upscale ambiance Forty Acres Soul Kitchen on Wealthy just might fit the bill. The new restaurant is bringing southern flavors with fresh ingredients and lots of vegetarian options to the bustling neighborhood.

Nothing says soul food quite like the sound of catfish sizzling...but Forty Acres offers so much more than that.

"Shrimp and grits, fried chicken, people are really excited about all the wonderful things that we are doing," said co-owner Lewis Williams. "It's comfort food with a twist."

"There are also a lot of vegan options, we are pretty much known for having a lot of vegan options right now that people are really excited about," he explained.

"The cuisine passes the snuff test from a southerners perspective, I'm from Atlanta so we are very sensitive about our soul food," explained a diner. He ordered the vegan wrap which features buffalo and black bean humus.

And listen up grits-lovers, they have a flight you can't miss.

"We have a northern grit, a southern grit, and a house grit. The house grit is a little more spicy, the other is more savory and our other is a little sweeter," Williams explained. "It really depends on where you are from in the south so we really try to capture all those things and put a twist on them."

The owners of this new addition to Wealthy Street were very intentional about choosing this location.

"This part of Wealthy was important for us to be here in this neighborhood, this neighborhood has gone through a lot there is a lot of history here so it really meant a lot for us to be here. We are really happy to be part of this community now," said Williams.

"This restaurant opening has done a lot for a lot of people between the jobs and how it makes (people feel). We see a lot of pride from people when they see this here."
