Taste of My Town: Furniture City Creamery

Ice cream season is in full swing, and you'll need the whole season to try all the made-from-scratch flavors at Furniture City Creamery.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Summer is finally here, and the long, lazy days call for sweet, cool treats.

You may need more than the summer to try all the flavors Furniture City Creamery has to offer. Now counting over one hundred flavors, the shop on Cherry Street makes each and every batch by hand.

"We have twelve [flavors] all the time," said shop owner Rachel Franko. "We have two that are vegan all the time. We also have pints and ice cream sandwiches that are ready to go and those can usually be additional flavors."

Rachel, a chemical engineer, uses her science background to systematically form recipes, making the ice cream itself taste like another flavor rather than adding in ingredients after the ice cream is made.

"My grandma and my mom make baked goods," added Franko. "I decided I wanted to do ice cream so I took their recipes for cookies and cakes and turned them into ice cream flavors."

The flavors have grown from there, and include unique options. Some of those unusual flavors include carrot cake, molasses cookie, creme brulee, and cinnamon basil. The shop is open year-round too, and seasonal flavors come out in the fall and winter months.

New flavor alert. We get a request for it all the time, here is our adaptation: Moon Blue #ithinkyoucanpickupwhatweareputtingdown

Visitors also love the vegan ice cream. Two of the rotating daily flavors are vegan.

New this year is a vintage ice cream truck.

"It's a 1970's Good Humor truck that we turned into our ice cream truck," said Franko. "We take all of our classic flavors and we have them packaged in cups."

Your ice cream purchase can also go to a good cause. On certain Tuesdays once a month, the shop donates 20 percent of proceeds to the "charity of the day."
