Taylor Swift can add fashion designer to her list of accomplishments.
The 29-year-old singer looked straight out of a storybook at the Time 100 Gala on Monday night, wearing a pastel peach-and-yellow J Mendel design that featured billowing sleeves. The fashion brand's creative director, Gilles Mendel, revealed that Swift actually had a hand in designing her fairytale look.
"Taylor always has a very strong point of view; she’s really extraordinary in how she transforms herself constantly," Mendel tells Page Six Style in an interview published on Wednesday. "She always comes to me with an idea; in this case, the theme was pastel colors and soft tones. Luckily, my recent spring collection was very much about those tones, these beautiful pale citrus colors. So we started with my spring palette, and from there, we built up the dress."
"Taylor wanted a really ethereal, hand-pleated moment, which is something we’ve always done so well," he shared.
The original design was from the designer's spring 2019 collection, but did not feature the off-the-shoulder sleeves.
“That bolero didn’t come from me -- it was her" Mendel revealed. "She had the vision of having some sort of cover that would give it a different volume than just a basic dress. So we developed, with our Gilles Mendel touch, this little hand-pleated, silk- sleeved bolero cover that I thought came out really stunning."
The "Love Story" songstress also wanted to make sure that the sleeves were detachable for when she took the stage to perform and play the guitar and piano.
Swift fans may also be able to recreate the look for themselves, as Mendel explained that while he has "never duplicated" any of the dresses he's designed for the singer, "after this experience … I think definitely, in the next collection, [there will be] some modification of what I’ve done for Taylor."
Meanwhile, fans can also shop the sleeveless version, which has limited sizes and costs $6,990.
