Build-A-Bear drew overwhelming crowds Thursday for its promotion, Pay your Age Day. So many people showed up that the stuffed animal company had to shut it down. Now, another chain aimed at children is going after that business
Chuck E. Cheese's, the pizza parlor and arcade company, offered its own Pay Your Age deal on Friday.
“Any kids can come in and if they are under the age of 9, they'll pay their age for 30 minutes of all you can play," said Katy Serba, Marketing Manager for Chuck E. Cheese's in Michigan.
The company came up with the idea Thursday night, after watching the pandemonium at Build-A-Bear stores across the country. The line had to be shut down before noon because it was at capacity.
At Rivertown Crossings in Grandville, Michael Ladow ended up waiting 14 hours to get his niece a bear. He said, “I just wanted to make her happy.”
Unfortunately, not everyone got what they came for. Those who didn't make it inside Build-A-Bear, got a $15 voucher for a future visit. Serba says they hope those families come to Chuck E.Cheese's for the deal. "The kids that did stay in line, they had a long wait. Unfortunately, some did not get a bear. So, we wanted them to come in, try again, come in as a family and make memories."
Chuck E.Cheese's says it's prepared for the crowds. It brought in extra staff and extra food.
"We just had to fill up our summer with fun activities and the deal was good: $6 for us, cheap entertainment for me and the kids," said Megan VanOeffelen.
The deal goes until close on Friday, July 13. That means you can get the deal until 10 p.m. at both locations in the Grand Rapids area.
