100 years of music with the Holland American Legion Band

See how the Holland American Legion Band is celebrating their 100th anniversary.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — 2020 marks the 100th year the Holland American Legion Band has been performing and this weekend, the community will be treated to a special concert to celebrate.

The band will perform their 2020 100th Year Gala Concert on Saturday, Feb. 8. It's at 7 p.m. in the Jack Miller Center for Musical Arts at Hope College, located in Holland.

There is no admission charge, but organizers of the concert say donations will be welcomed.

The Holland American Legion Band is the oldest continuously-performing Legion band in the country. The history of the band goes back to 1920, when the Willard F. Leenhoust Posts #6 of the American Legion established the Legion Band. 100 years later, the Holland American Legion Band still performs.

The band has been performing free shows, at parades and events for the Holland area for years. Members have traveled to Europe, Hawaii and even Washington D.C. for performances and to honor and remember U.S. veterans.

The bad in 1920 debuted with just 25 members and now there are nearly 100, with regular members, musicians who join when they can and high school and college students that come in during the summer concert series.

The traditional summer concert series starts in June and runs through September with weekly concerts in Kollen Park.

The Holland American Legion Band is a non-profit organization. For more information about the band, or to view the concert schedule, visit hollandlegionband.org.
