Celebrating Black History Month in Muskegon

Throughout the month of February, the Hackley Public Library will host a series of events to celebrate Black History Month.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — February is Black History Month and if you're looking for events to celebrate, the Hackley Public Library may be the place for you.

The library is hosting a series of events in honor of Black History Month, including trivia and a sweet soul food dessert contest. All the events are free to the public.

Here's a rundown of some of what's going on:

  • Saturday, Feb. 1 is the 6th annual Black History Trivia Contest. Groups of 4 per team with pit their knowledge against each other. Trivia is happening from 2 until 3 p.m. Register for the event here.
  • Monday Feb. 3 is a Poetry Open Mic Night. It's also where you can pick up a Black History Month calendar. Patrons are encouraged to share their own poetry or read work from their favorite Black History, Black Experience or African-American poet. Register by calling 231-722-8000, or by visiting this link. Walk-ins are also welcome.
  • Saturday, Feb. 8 is the Sweet Soul Food Contest. Recipes are competing for the best in the city. There will be adult and children's categories, as well as prices. Bring enough delicious sweets for attendees, plus the judge, to get a taste. It starts at 2 p.m. Register by calling 231-722-8000 or at this link by Feb. 7. 
  • Finally, on Saturday, Feb. 22, there will be a must-see performance by the Ebony Road Players. The group will present "The Meeting" -- a play inspired by the meeting of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's an all ages show starting at 2 p.m.
