Get Organized: Conquering kids clutter

See ways to get organized when it comes to everything from school papers to toys.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Conquering kids clutter can seem chaotic. Take a deep breath – and reassure yourself that this is manageable!

Founder of Moxie Life Organizing, LLC, Kate Wert, joined My West Michigan Wednesday with tips on how to tackle decluttering your kids toys, books, clothing and more.

"It’s fair to say that most children have toys sitting stagnant in spaces," Wert explained. "Some parents may declutter toys on the sly but keep in mind this doesn’t teach our children responsibility or ownership of items."

Conquering clutter is best done collectively, Wert explained. If starting with decluttering toys, first get your children on board. As a family, take the time to establish some shared goals. Maybe you’d like to spend more time together or minimize stress from stuff.

Wert also suggests offering rewards for participation, such as a family outing or dinner date. When working with children, keep in mind that perfection is not the goal. A better objective is to get the home to a more manageable state.

"Celebrate the small successes and don’t forget to cheer them on along the way," Wert said.
