Baxter Community Center celebrates 50 years of service in Grand Rapids

It is their mission to be a Christian response to human needs and that’s just what this community treasure has been doing for 50 years now.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Center is located in the heart of the Baxter neighborhood and provide services and programming to all who need their help.  There are medical and dental services, a nationally accredited child development center, mentoring programs for young and old, and a variety of community services that include a food pantry, clothing closet, gardening and canning classes.

The celebration of 50 years has been ongoing throughout 2019.    Coming up this Wednesday, November 6, is Baxter’s annual gala celebration, called Opening Doors.  The event will honor Cle Jackson and Jim Haveman with the St. Francis Award, presented each year to two individuals who have gone above and beyond to champion racial equity and social justice in Grand Rapids.

The theme of this year’s event is Golden Thread. This theme represents the thread of courage, hope, and expectation that has been woven into Baxter’s everyday work over the last 50 years.  To purchase tickets, visit http://www.wearebaxter.org/openingdoors/.
