GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period is held each year from October 15 through December 7 so this is the time to explore your options and choose the right health care plan for you. The process can be challenging so it's important you understand your choices and know whether you qualify for more benefits to help save money and improve health. One plan to be aware of is the Dual Special Needs Plan, or dual plan. These plans combine Medicare benefits for people with financial need (or are on Medicaid) and can offer additional benefits and features, usually for no monthly premium.
When it comes to dual plans, lots of people are eligible but a huge percentage are not enrolled and may be missing out on additional benefits. One particular dual plan, the United Healthcare Dual Complete Plan, has improved its benefit offerings for Michigan residents in 2020. With this plan, people may be eligible for additional benefits at no extra charge. These benefits include:
- Dental coverage for routine exams, cleanings and x-rays, plus up to $2,000 for certain crowns, root canals, extractions and dentures
- $1,100 credit to purchase over-the-counter health products such as vitamins and first-aid supplies in store at Walgreens or by mail, online or call center ordering
- Hearing exams and $2,000 every two years for hearing aids
- An annual eye exam and $200 each year for eyewear
Although requirements vary from state to state and by circumstances, a family of one making less than $16,000 a year or a family of 2 making less than $21,000 a year may qualify.
