Grand Rapids and Kent County launch important lead awareness campaign

It's focused on the hidden dangers for lead exposure and children.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The City of Grand Rapids and Kent County Health Department have launched a lead awareness campaign called, “Don’t Play Around.” It’s focused on the hidden dangers for lead exposure and children.

Lead hides in the places you least expect, and you and your family can be exposed during an activity that isn’t always obvious. Don't play around with lead. Look for places where paint is chipped or peeling, or where lead painted surfaces have rubbed together, creating dust.

Lead is most harmful to children, especially those younger than 6. Elevated blood lead levels in children can cause issues with growth and development as well as health, learning and behavioral problems. If you spend time or live in a home built before 1978 – especially if there are children younger than 6 in the home – take action to prevent lead exposure.
