iChiro Clinics gives advice on back popping and why it's happening

Learn why your back is making a popping sound and what causes back pain.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Having back pain is common these days and it may feel like things have popped out of place. Dr. Michael Kwast, CEO of iChiro Clinics, stopped by to give us some insight on that popping sensation you may be feeling in your back.

A lot of people believe their backs have popped out, however, that’s not the case. The back can’t pop out of place without serious trauma and would need emergency medical assistant if your back really did pop out of a joint.

Along your spine are deep stabilizer muscles and they go to one vertebrae to another and these muscles, when you have a trauma or an injury, these muscles will contract and then pitch down which causes the misalignment where people think their back is popped out.

The popping sound is the tiny deep stabilizer muscles that are injured that are pulling, squeezing, compressing and pinching the joint and causing different types of irritation.

Dr. Kwast said that having an adjustment helps because the adjustment will help cause the deep muscles to stretch and relax and open.

If the popping has occurred for a few or several years, it will require multiple adjustments due to the muscles wanting to constrict back to its original state.

However, if it’s a new and hasn’t been going on for that long, it will be adjusted more quickly if treated right away.

People who are active and in good shape tend to have less back pain or the popping sounds coming from their back, but athletes still get adjustments for when their muscles are tight to prevent the back pain and popping sounds.
