Re-Think event seeks to lure people back home to West Michigan

You know the old saying, "there's no place like home." That’s especially true during the holiday season.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — You know the old saying, "there's no place like home."  That’s especially true during the holiday season.

There is an effort underway to get folks who grew up in West Michigan to return home for good. It is a partnership between Hello West Michigan and The Right Place. Hello West Michigan was started in 2007 to spotlight the region as a great place to work. Their mission is to educate people about the type of lifestyle that is available here, actively attract new people to West Michigan, and help connect people interested in moving here.

The Right Place is the economic developer for West Michigan. They work to retain and attract companies to the region. Talent attraction is a big issue for companies, which is why these two groups have partnered  to create an event called "Re-Think West Michigan."

It's the in-person version of what Hello West Michigan does all year long: talking to people about what it's like here and connecting them with employers. A lot of people come back home to West Michigan for the Thanksgiving holiday, and they are being invited to The Bob in Grand Rapids for a casual networking event on Thanksgiving Eve (traditionally the biggest bar night of the year.)

There are five additional events happening around West Michigan at the same time, doing the same thing. The selected communities are Hastings, Muskegon, Fremont, Oceana County, and Ludington, and each location will have different employers present. Attendees will find everything from Spectrum Health, the largest employer in West Michigan, to smaller companies like Gerber Federal Credit Union in Fremont. Last year, there were almost 50 different employers that participated across the six events.
