GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — United Bank has joined forces with Family Promise of Grand Rapids to present “Blanket the Community,” an effort to ease the burden of staying warm during the cold Michigan winters.

The community bank is encouraging anyone who can help to drop off a new blanket to any of United Bank’s 12 locations now through the end of the year. The bank, in turn, will deliver those blankets to families in need.

A blanket may seem like a simple gift but it can make a real difference to those who struggle to stay warm during the winter months.  Each United Bank branch has the option to select a local organization to receive the blankets they collect or to gift the bank’s corporate recipient, Family Promise of Grand Rapids.

According to the social service agency, in Kent County alone, there are more than 120 families on a wait-list who are in need of emergency shelter tonight. This only includes the families they are aware of.  The average age of children who Family Promise serves is under 6-years-old.

In fact, children are the new face of homelessness. Contrary to stereotypes about homelessness, many families that enter emergency shelter are employed. They simply can't afford the cost of an apartment. A blanket goes a long way in keeping children warm as well as providing security during an extremely difficult time.

For those who wish to participate in “Blanket the Community,” the donation of new, a twin-sized blanket is best.  Blankets that are character themed are fun for the kids. Giving is easy - drop off a new blanket to any of United Bank’s 12 locations from now through the end of the year.  United Bank has pledged to donate one dollar to Family Promise for every blanket received.
