We're hearing more and more about the benefits of weight training and can't help but wonder, why is weight training so beneficial -- and how can we get in on it?

Jessica and Mike Luepke are from Valeo / Training in Holland, which recently won the people’s choice award for the “Best of the Best” in both the Fitness Center/Gym and Personal Training categories. Weight Training is something they specialize in, so they joined the Weekend Morning team to share some insights and demonstrate some moves.

"Let’s face it: Putting everything else aside, life is EASIER when you’re strong. Whether it’s carrying groceries in one trip, lifting children into the car, or moving furniture up and down the stairs: You can handle it," explains Jessica. "In addition to making life easier, strength training does wonders to help you look, move, and feel (even) more awesome."

Jessica went on to explain how weight training can help you look better, because you're able to keep the muscle you have and increase it for a more toned and tight physique. Strength/weight training is one of the most effective ways to burn fat and build muscle.

Strength training also helps you move better. Not only can strength training help prevent injury and help your joints become more mobile or stable, it also increases bone density, builds a stronger heart, reduces resting blood pressure, improves blood flow, helps control blood sugar, improves cholesterol levels, and improves your balance and coordination. It also helps halt or even reverse the loss of muscle as you age -- which helps you stay independent (and out of a nursing home, as Mike explained), live longer and have better quality life.

Jessica also shared with us how strength training can also help you feel better. You may just find yourself with more energy and confidence, less stress and anxiety, and a better overall mood. Those who regularly weight train think better, as resistance training has been proven to help increase cognitive function.

But what happens when you're schedule is busy and you only have time for one type of exercise -- should you be lifting versus cardio or any other physical activity?

"For those looking to get the best body change possible, we recommend, in order of priority: strength training, then interval type training, then, and only if you still have time, longer cardio bouts," explained Mike. By making weight training a priority, you’ll be more apt to lose fat and not muscle and burn calories during your sessions.

"Research shows your elevated caloric burn continues for hours after you workout, compared to dropping off right away like it does during more cardio-based exercise," Jessica said. Plus, muscle is more metabolically active, meaning the more muscle tissue you have on your body, the more calories you’ll burn everyday just sitting around being you.
