Be patriotic and healthy this Memorial Day!

Celebrating Memorial Day with friends and family? It doesn't have to be all hamburgers and hotdogs. Registered Dietitian Wendy Brookhouse from the McCahill Group showed us how to be patriotic and healthy.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With Memorial Day just around the corner, a lot of us are getting ready to host family and friends for a outdoor barbeque, but it doesn't need to be all hamburgers and hotdogs. Registered Dietitian Wendy Brookhouse showed us how to use red, white and blue fruits and veggies to have a patriotic and healthy Memorial Day.

All American Breakfast:

  • Whole Wheat waffles or English Muffins 
  • 2 TBSP peanut butter 
  • Bananas, & berries

Yogurt Parfait

  • Blueberries 
  • Strawberries
  • Granola

Strawberry ‘Boats’ 

  • Strawberries, Bananas & Blueberries 
  • Attached with toothpicks

Vegetable Flag 

  • Alternating ‘stripes’
  • Cucumbers, Jicama, Red Bell Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes 
  • Serve with Greek yogurt dip or hummus
  • Serve either in a blue bowl

Greek yogurt dip:

  • 1 cup Plain Yogurt
  • ¾ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp dried dill
  • ¼ tsp soy sauce
