Walk For Good Food raises money to address food access issues, poverty

The Access Walk for Good Food 5K was held in Grand Rapids Sunday afternoon.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Walk For Good Food brought a group of people to downtown Grand Rapids Sunday afternoon to raise awareness and funds for addressing food access issues in the city.

The group met at Park Church on East Park Place NE.

The 42nd annual 5K aims to fund 14 non-profit organizations that combat food access issues and poverty. The organizations' work includes community gardening, urban farming, nutrition programs, food pantries and meal programs to food justice and community development initiatives.

Access of West Michigan helps organization the walk, and they define "good food" as

  • Healthy—food that provides nourishment
  • Fair—no one was exploited in the production process
  • Affordable—everyone has access
  • Green—produced in an environmentally stable manner

Since the walk started in 1981, it has raised over $6 million for dozens of local and international non-profit organizations. The goal for this year's event is to have over 800 people participate and raise $110,000.
