'It's emotional; it's exciting' West Michigan foster mom gets fitted for free hearing aids

Lena Scoby found out she had hearing loss when she was 27 years old.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. — Lena Scoby found out she had hearing loss two years ago at the age of 27. But on Jan. 21, she was fitted for free hearing aids because she won a contest ran by the Hearing Wellness Center in Norton Shores.

"It's emotional; it's exciting," Scoby said with tears in her eyes after getting fitted with the new hearing aids. "I'm excited."

The Hearing Wellness Center started the contest in December with the goal of fitting one person in West Michigan with hearing aids in the New Year. They called the promotion Hear For the New Year.

Scoby said that her co-workers and family encouraged her to enter the contest, which asked contestants to share their story of hearing loss. In her post Scoby describes that her hearing loss story started when she was an infant, growing up with chronic ear infections. She didn't find out about her hearing loss until much later in life.

"I was 27 at the time and was so upset," she wrote on Facebook. "My life has changed a lot in the last two years since learning of the hearing loss. I am working full time in an office, taking online college classes, and I am a foster-mom to a sweet 6 year old girl."

Her post received nearly 700 likes and it was shared over 300 times.

"The support from everybody has been amazing," she said.
